Angolan-Zimbabwean relations are bilateral diplomatic relations between Angola and Zimbabwe .

History

On November 15, 1994, Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and South African President Nelson Mandela met in Lusaka, Zambia to discuss the Lusaka Protocol (a peace agreement signed in August to end the civil war in Angola ). Mugabe and Mandela made a joint statement that they were ready to meet with Jonas Savimbi , the leader of the pro-Western group of UNITA militants. Mandela invited Savimbi to come to negotiations in South Africa, but Savimbi refused [1] [2] . In 1998, the Angolan government purchased ammunition and uniforms from Zimbabwe in violation of the arms embargo imposed by the Lusaka Protocol. In 2002, thanks to foreign arms shipments, the Angolan government won the civil war [3] [4] .

In 1998, Angola, Namibia, and Zimbabwe sent their troops to participate in the Second Congolese War (1998-2003) on the side of DR Congo President Joseph Kabila , who fought against the Liberation Movement of the Congo , Uganda , the Movement for Congolese Democracy and Rwanda . In 2002, the armed forces of Angola and other neighboring countries left DR Congo, but Rwanda and Zimbabwe continued the war [5] [4] .

In 2003, Transparency International named the governments of Angola and Zimbabwe the most corrupt in South Africa [6] . In June 2015, the Ambassador of Angola to Zimbabwe made a statement that excellent relations have developed between the countries based on common political and economic interests [7] . In September 2016, the governments of both countries made statements that Angola and Zimbabwe will strengthen military cooperation [8] .

In November 2017, a military coup took place in Zimbabwe, President Robert Mugabe was taken into custody. On November 21, 2017, Angolan President Juan Lawrence flew to Zambia to coordinate with Edgar Lungu on the situation in Zimbabwe. [9] Juan Lawrence expressed his readiness to personally arrive in Harare to participate in the resolution of the political crisis in Zimbabwe [10] [11] .

Trade

In 1992, a joint trade commission was created, whose task was to reduce trade barriers between countries. In 2017, Angola imported agricultural machinery from Zimbabwe [12] [13] .
