Born in a very religious family of middle income. His parents were Giovanni and Margarita Appela. He studied civil and canon law. He was ordained priest on August 17, 1537, after which he worked in the church court of Naples. In 1566, on behalf of the Archbishop of Naples, he was appointed manager of a monastery in this city, where discipline completely fell, but failed in this matter, despite his efforts, and was even the victim of an assassination attempt by persons who oversaw prostitution among the nuns of the monastery. On November 30 of the same year, he became a novice in the order of the Theatians, before that, being in their monastery cured of the wounds received during the assassination attempt, he received the religious name Andrea; in this order he served until the end of his life and soon became known for his piety, religious zeal and wisdom. In 1570, at the invitation of Carlo Borromeo, arrived in Milan to reform the local diocese. He was a member of the Council of Trent .
He left a number of theological works. On November 10, 1608, during the festive mass, he fell and died in the evening of the same day. He was beheaded by Pope Urban VIII on June 10, 1625, and on May 22, 1712 Pope Clement XI canonized him. Catholics commemorate it on November 10.
