Biography
In 1940 he graduated from the craft carpentry school in Prague. From 1945 he studied at the Prague Conservatory , later until 1951 he studied architecture at the Higher School of Applied Arts in Prague .
In 1946-1948 He headed the production of the Big Opera on May 5, since 1948 he was an artist, the director of the production and the visual and technical part of the Prague National Theater .
In 1954-1957 - Lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts (Prague) . In 1968-1989 - head of the architecture studio, professor at the Higher School of Applied Arts in Prague .
Since 1973 he headed the theater “ Laterna Magika ”.
Creativity
In 1958, he was preparing the Czechoslovak pavilion at the World Exhibition EXPO-58 in Brussels , where he applied the split-screen for the first time.
Since 1958 he often toured abroad. He was engaged in the production of scenography for La Fenice Theater (Venice), the Metropolitan Opera ( New York ), the John F. Kennedy Center ( Washington ), the National Theater of Slovenia ( Ljubljana ), the Grand Opera (Paris), the Bayreuth Festival ( Germany ), The Bolshoi Theater ( Geneva ), in London , the Bavarian State Opera ( Munich ), the German Opera ( Berlin ), etc.
He participated in preparations for EXPO-67 in Montreal and EXPO-70 in Osaka .
Joseph Freedom participated in the creation of more than 700 performances in theaters around the world.
Joseph Freedom, the inventor of new scenographic methods, applied the latest inventions of electronics, optics, kinetics, one of the first to use laser , holography , split-screen and new types of lighting in theater productions.
He perceived scenography as an active, dynamic component, equally participating in the performance and the creation of his idea. J. Freedom collaborated with a number of the largest theater directors in the world. One of the first was G. A. Tovstonogov , who staged " Optimistic Tragedy " at the Prague National Theater in 1957. In the Czech Republic, he was a partner of Alfred Radok or Otomar Kreichi. With his brothers Emil and Alfred Radoki, he developed a split-screen system for the first program of the Laterna Magika theater.
Joseph Freedom took part in the creation of the theater "Divadlo for brano".
