Biography

Alexander Berkh was born on October 29, 1830 in Nikolaev in the family of Admiral Mauritius (Moritz) Borisovich Berkh [1] .

During the first siege of the city of Sevastopol during the Crimean War, Berch was in charge of work on coastal batteries Nos. 8 and 10, erected the first counter-interviews against the 5th and 6th bastions, and in the construction of the redoubts of Volynsky and Selenginsky and Kamchatsky’s lunette the place with all the trenching operations and under heavy fire armed 2 batteries [2] .

At the end of the Crimean campaign, in 1856, A.M.Berkh was transferred by the command to Kronstadt , where he took part in the construction of the fort “Grand Prince Konstantin” and the northern batteries No. 1 and No. 2 [2] .

In 1866, in the Kherson province, Berch supervised the work on strengthening the harbor of Nikolaev , where the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Empire and the mouths of the Dnieper near the city of Kherson were stationed for a long time [2] . In 1877, promoted to major general .

Before the Russian-Turkish war of 1877–78. Berch was engaged in the construction of fortifications that serve to protect the city of Ochakovo [2] .

Since 1886, Berch was a member of the engineering committee of the main engineering department of the Russian imperial army [2] . In 1889 he was promoted to lieutenant general [1] .

In 1904, Alexander Berch was promoted to general engineer ; in addition, from 1904 to September 1905, Berch was a member of the Alexander Committee on the wounded . He retired in 1906 [1] .

Alexander Mavrikevich Berch died on March 7, 1909 [1] .

Family

Married. He had 10 children in marriage. One of them, Boris (1858–1930), followed in his father's footsteps: he graduated from the Engineering Academy in Nikolaev and rose to the rank of major general, held the position of chief inspector of the Marine Construction Unit; the children of the latter died of starvation during the siege of Leningrad [1] .
