History
The monument was erected in 1927 in honor of the 10th anniversary of the independence of Finland . Major General V.A. Teslev (Tesleff) , a native of Vyborg, proposed to erect a monument on top of a cliff, on the site of the demolished statue of the Russian emperor, and he donated money to create a sculpture (about one hundred thousand Finnish stamps). Sculptor JG Finne he chose a lion leaning with his right paw on the coat of arms of the Vyborg province (the coat of arms of Finnish Karelia - two arms extending from the bottom: to the right in armor, holding a straight sword, to the left in chain mail, holding a curved sword; over the hands of a crown). The inscription was carved on a four-meter granite pedestal: SUOMEN ITSENÄISYYSJULISTUKSEN MUISTOKSI 6 · XII · 1917 (“In memory of the independence of Finland 06.12.1917”).
After the Soviet-Finnish War (1939-1940), the monument to Peter I was returned to the historical site by the Soviet military, and the Independence Monument was dropped from a cliff.
When the granite sculpture fell, its paws fell apart. However, in 1941, the fragments of the sculpture were again installed in the park by Finnish military personnel, who again dropped the monument to Peter I after occupying Vyborg during the Great Patriotic War . After the Soviet troops returned to the city as a result of the Vyborg operation , the largest fragment of the monument was buried in the Monrepos park, where it was discovered by the park in 1989. Currently, it is located in front of the Directorate of Monrepos.
