Biography
Born in South Carolina . According to her, the first symptoms of the disorder appeared in her as early as 2 years old, however, only at school age did she realize that something strange was happening to her. People around her did not believe her and laughed at her stories about “other girls” living in her body. Later, her parents still showed her to the doctor because of strange memory lapses. He diagnosed the girl with an “unusual form of amnesia ” [4] .
Already in adulthood, a woman had to go to a psychiatric clinic - one of her ego states tried to kill her daughter Taffy [4] . The first suspicion fell on schizophrenia , but later psychiatrist Corbett Zigpen diagnosed her with a dissociative identity disorder . In the body of Sizemore, more than 20 ego states of different ages and character coexisted [7] . Doctors first proposed shock therapy , which Sizemore refused, and the treatment was more gentle [4] .
In 1957, treating psychiatrists Klekli and Sigpen published the book Three Faces of Eve about Sizemore using the pseudonym Eva White and not revealing the patient’s real name. In the same year, the book was filmed ; Sizemore received a fee of $ 5,000 for the sale of the rights to its film studio history [4] . The performer of the role of Eva Joan Woodward was awarded the Oscar for Best Actress [7] . The following year, Sizemore, under the pseudonym Evelyn Lancaster, co-authored with James Pauling, the book Strangers in My Body: The Last Face of Eve ( Eng. Strangers in My Body: The Final Face of Eve ). In 1977, Sizemore, together with Helen Patillo, wrote an autobiography, “ I'm Eve ”. The book was published under its real name [6] . After the promulgation of the true personality of "Eve", Sizemore began to lecture, take part in various conferences devoted to dissociative identity disorder, speak on television [6] . She also became interested in drawing, began selling her own paintings [4] . By the 1980s, she was recognized as completely cured [7] .
Many materials about Sizemore's life, including her letters, diaries, documents, photographs and videos, are stored in Duke University's library. Most of them are somehow related to her struggle against mental illness [6] . Sizemore’s records show that she was in active correspondence with psychiatrists, personally prepared materials for a book about herself, kept diaries for their subsequent publication and collected all the information about the release of books and a film, and made appropriate clippings from newspapers [6] .
