Biography

Carl Augustus was born in the castle of Wilhelmstal in Bavaria. The eldest son and heir of the Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1876-1923), who ruled in 1901 - 1918 , and his second wife, Princess Theodora of Saxe-Meiningen .

On November 9, 1918, as a result of the German Revolution, Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (father of Karl Augustus) lost his ducal throne and left with his family for Silesia , where he owned the Heinrichau Castle (modern Polish city of Zembice ).

On April 24, 1923, after the death of his father, Crown Prince Carl Augustus became head of the Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach Ducal House.

Until 1922, Prince Charles Augustus of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach was third in line for the royal throne of the Netherlands .

Karl August Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach was an officer in the Wehrmacht and served in a tank regiment. In June 1945, he and his family fled from Thuringia , occupied by Soviet troops, to West Germany, occupied by the Allies.

76-year-old Karl August Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach died on October 14, 1988 in the village of Schienen on Lake Constance . His title was inherited by his son Michael (born November 15, 1946 ).

Marriage and children

On October 5, 1944, Carl Augustus married Elizabeth von Wangenheim-Winterstein (January 16, 1912 , Tübingen March 15, 2010 , Munich ) at the Wartburg Castle in Turin, daughter of Baron Otmar von Wangenheim-Winterstein and Maud von Trütschlert. The couple lived in the castles of Wartburg and . They had three children:

  • Princess Elizabeth of Saxe-Weimar-Eisanach (born July 22, 1945), husband since 1981, Mindert Diderick de Kant (born August 6, 1934). They divorced in 1983
  • Prince Michael of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (born November 15, 1946 ), Head of the Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach House (since 1988 )
  • Princess Beatrice-Maria Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (born March 11, 1948), wife from 1977 of Charles Martin Davidson (born 1940), from whom she has a daughter, Bettina Davidson
