Sports career
Gur Shelef and his brother Uri are the sons of the former Tel Aviv Hapoel basketball player and Israeli team Ami Shelef . Gur began his basketball career at Hapoel (Givatayim) [1] . In the early 1990s, he played for the children and youth teams of Israel.
At the beginning of his career, Shelef walked perfectly under the ring and handed out programs like a point guard, promising to become an ideal forward , but turned out to be insufficiently powerful for playing the fourth number [1] . In 1995-1998, he played for the Hapoel team (Upper Galilee) (including scoring 27 points in the European Cup match against Real Madrid with Bodiroga and Arlaukas [1] ), and then moved to the leading Israeli club - “ Maccabi ”(Tel Aviv) . With this team, he won the championship and the Israeli Cup for seven years in a row, eventually becoming its captain. In 2001, Shelef and Maccabi won the FIBA Super League , and in 2004 and 2005 they became ULEB Euroleague champions twice in a row (and Gur himself thus became the first captain in two decades whose team won the main European club tournament two years in a row [2] ) In the Euroleague of 2003/2004, Shelef played a key role in Maccabi's entry into the final four, at the very end of the game giving the ball to Derrick Sharp across the entire court [2] . Since 1997, Shelef also played for the Israeli national team, playing with her at the final stage of the four European Championships . Gur was also a captain in the national team until the incident in 2003, when in a training match between the Tel Aviv-based Hapoel, he hit a fan for an insulting shout to his father. Despite Shelef's apology, the Israeli Basketball Federation stripped him of his captain's armband. [3]
Although Shelef retained the captain's rank at Maccabi, he spent little time on the court, mostly remaining on the bench. The lack of playing time made him say goodbye to the Tel Aviv super club and sign a contract with the Belgian Antwerp Giants team after the winning season of 2004/5 [4] . In Antwerp, where another Israeli coach, Arik Shibak, was a coach [5] , Shelef spent two years at the end of this term winning the Belgian Cup with the team. In the final match with the club “Leyk” (Liege), Shelef became the top scorer of the Antwerp with 12 points, turning the tide of the game when the opponents were 45-39 [6] .
In August 2007, Shelef, who missed a significant part of the previous season due to injuries, announced the end of his playing career [4] . After that, he spent four years as manager at Maccabi (Tel Aviv), until the team lost the league title in the 2012/13 season. Shelef was dismissed from his post, to which another former Maccabi player, Nikola Vujicic, was invited. Sheleth himself was offered a place on the board of directors of the team [7] .
