History

The group was founded by three friends [2] who lived in a part of Boston called Roxbury ( Donna Summer was from the same place). They began by singing the songs of Jackson 5 and The Temptations [3] .

(Bobby Brown started singing with his school friends Mike Bivins and Ricky Bell in 1978. [4] . Then they were still in elementary school and wanted to play with their own money and earn their own expenses [2] .) Their group grew into the New Edition group [4] .

It is believed that the New Edition group itself was founded in 1981 with the following composition: Bobby Brown (12 years old), Ricky Bell (14), Michael Bivins (13), Ronald Devaux (14) and Ralph Tresvant (13) [3] . (At first, Bell, Bivins and Brown took a friend to the group, Ralph Tresvant, as the fourth member, and after they won the young talent competition in 1980, they took Ronnie Devo [2] .

After the group won a few more contests for young talents, they (in one of these contests) [2] [5] were noticed by producer and talent seeker Maurice Starr . In 1983, he arranged for them to contract with Streetwise, a small record label, and in the same year, the guys released their debut album, Candy Girl . This, according to Biography.com, “sweet as sugar, a collection of songs” suddenly at the moment created a real sensation around the guys, made them stars. And the title track of this album is “Candy Girl” , very reminiscent of the song “ABC” of the group Jackson 5 [5] , became a huge hit - headed the rhythm and blues chart of Billboard [2] and even got into 1st place in the UK [6] . At the time of release of the album, the guys were from 13 to 15 years old [2] .

In 1985, Billboard called the New Edition "the most successful black teenager group since Jackson Five. [7]

In 1986, the group arranged to vote for the care of Bobby Brown from it. The results of the vote were for care. The fact is that the other four participants were afraid that the obscene, passing all barriers behavior of Bobby Brown on the stage threatens the future of the group [8] .

Then came the “All for Love” tour, during which Bobby waged war against Ralph Tresvant all the time and stuck in his vocal solo parts [8] .

In 1985, Brown left the group with the condition that the group label ( MCA ) will sign a solo recording contract with him. Brown's first album was released in 1986. His career was very successful, with a whole series of hits in the top ten of “Billboard” and with a climax in the form of a Grammy award. (His second solo album Don't Be Cruel Was released in 1988 and it was, in particular, the song " My Prerogative ".) [8]

The group, after the departure of Bobby Brown, was a quartet for some time [7] .

Then (in 1988 [9] ) Bobby Brown was replaced by Johnny Gill [10] , who in 1983 earned himself a solo hit with the song “Super Love”, and he also had a hit in 1984 with Stacy Lattiso - "Perfect Combination". (Once Michael saw him on stage, was impressed with the way he danced “brutally”, and invited him to the group. As Johnny himself says, he was auditioned for him and was told that he needed to get into at least one dance pas. Joke that he never hit, but was taken.) [9]

Two years later, in 1990, the group decided to disperse [9] .

In 1996, Bobby Brown joined the band again to release her comeback album Home Again . But in the middle of the tour, he again began to behave unworthily. He stretched out his solo set and climbed into the time allotted to Bell Biv DeVoe (the Bella Trio, Biwa and Devos). As a result, he again left the group [8] .
