Joseph Maria Smits van Waesberghe (April 18, 1901, Breda - October 9, 1986, Amsterdam ) is a Dutch mediaeval musicologist. At home, he is considered one of the founders of modern Dutch musicology [2] .

He was educated in a Jesuit seminary. He was ordained a priest. In 1922–35 he studied philosophy and theology. In 1935–37 he taught at the gymnasiums of St. Canisia in Nijmegen and in 1937-43 - St. Ignatia in Amsterdam, in 1939–43 - in the Rotterdam Conservatory and in 1944–46 in the Amsterdam Conservatory . In 1947–71 He taught the history and theory of music of the Middle Ages at the University of Amsterdam (professor since 1957). In 1953 - Dr. honoris causa of the Pontifical Institute of Church Music in Rome.

He was also engaged in public administration work. In 1954–58 was Secretary General of the Netherlands Union of Composers (Nederlandse Toonkunstenaars Vereniging), in 1958–67 - President of the Netherlands Union of St. Gregory (Sint-Gregoriusvereniging). He was a cultural adviser to the Dutch government, and editor of several Dutch periodicals (including the Divitiae musicae artis series). In 1976 he was awarded a government award for the public and scientific merits - the Order of the Netherlands Lion (knight).

The main research area of ​​Smiths van Wasberge is the theory of music of the Middle Ages. An outstanding paleographer, he compiled one of the volumes of RISM "Theory of Music from Carolingos to 1400" (1961), which still has not lost relevance. In his declining years, in a number of journal articles from 1971–72. he outlined in detail his method of working with an ancient source (principles of constructing a codem stems , editing, commenting, citing, etc.).

Throughout his life he dealt with the heritage of Guido Aretinsky , made critical editions of all his treatises except the "Message", wrote a monograph about Guido (in Latin) and a number of important articles (in German and English). In addition to Guido, he published works on the music of Aribo Scholast , John Cotton , anonymous treatises of the school of Guido, Berno from Reichenau , and Jacob Liege . One of the most famous works of Smiths van Wasberge today is the book “Musical education. The Doctrine and Theory of Music in the Middle Ages ”(1969), containing 122 facsimiles (including colored ones) of medieval manuscripts about music.
