Birlag

Birlag ( Birsky forced labor camp ) - a unit operating in the structure of the Main Directorate of forced labor camps of the People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs of the USSR ( GULAG of the NKVD of the USSR ).

History

The birlag was singled out as an independent unit in the structure of the NKVD of the USSR in April 1939 on the basis of Dallag, which was dissolved in the same year. The Birlag administration was located at the Bira station of the Far Eastern Railway (now the urban-type settlement of Bira, Obluchensky district, Jewish Autonomous Region ). In the operational command, he initially subordinated to the Directorate of Forced Labor Camps and Colonies of the NKVD Directorate for the Khabarovsk Territory ( UITLK UNKVD of the Khabarovsk Territory ), and later to the Office of the NKVD Forestry Camps (NLLP NKVD). Birlag was closed in early 1942 .

As such, the Birlag with its 50 zones was really closed in 1942. After 1942, ITU No. 258 continued to exist. The final collapse occurred in 1953. PO Box 258 still exists, there is no forestry. Remains of former zones are still preserved from Bira to the north.

Production

The main production activity of the Birlag prisoners was logging.
