Yala ( Sinhala. යාල ජාතික වනෝද්යානය ) is a national park in the southeastern part of Sri Lanka . It is located in the southern province of the country and in the province of Uva , approximately 270 km from the capital of Sri Lanka, the city of Colombo . With an area of about 979 km², Yala is the second largest national park in the country. It was created in 1900 as a reserve, and in 1938 received the status of a national park.

44 species of mammals live in Yala Park [1] , including the Ceylon elephant (the population is 300-350 individuals) [2] . The park has one of the highest leopard densities in the world [3] . There are also Sri Lankan gubach, Indian buffalo, Ceylon macaque , musang , red thin lory , cat-fisherman and so on.
There are 46 species of reptiles in the park, of which 5 species are endemic, among them: Ceylon krayt , xenochrophis asperrimus , chrysopelea taprobanica, Ceylon kalot and Ceylon crypto-eared agama . The park is inhabited by 18 species of amphibians, of which 2 are endemic to the island of Sri Lanka, as well as 21 species of freshwater fish. Yala is home to 215 species of birds, of which 6 are endemic to Sri Lanka [1] .
