The teenagers

The Teenagers , better known as Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers , is an American vocal group, a vivid representative of the do-woop musical style. It was very popular in the second half of the 1950s, when all the participants were teenagers, and Frankie Laimon was the frontman and main vocalist [1] .

History

At the time Frankie Laimon met the local vocal group The Premiers, he was 12 years old and worked at a grocery store. They were later renamed The Teenagers [1] . They wrote their future hit “ Why Do Fools Fall in Love ” (in their version it was called “Why Do Birds Sing So Gay?”) And went with her in the spring or summer of 1955 to audition.

This song (released under the name The Teenagers featuring Frankie Lymon) rose in February 1956 to number one on the Billboard Top 100 , and 13-year-old Frankie Laimon became the star and idol of millions. Since then, the guys have been regular guests on musical television programs and have traveled with concert tours in the United States and Great Britain. By the end of the year, already as Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers, they were one of the most popular music groups in the world [1] .

At the end of 1957, during their second tour of the UK, Frankie Laimon first recorded the song without an accompanying band. Subsequently, their paths with the group diverged. Individually, neither Laimon solo nor the group The Teenagers without his former popularity could not have achieved [1] .

In 1993, Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers was admitted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , and in 2000 to the Vocal Group Hall of Fame [1] .

In addition, two songs performed by Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers, “ I'm Not a Juvenile Delinquent ” and “ Why Do Fools Fall In Love ,” are on the 500 Songs That Shaped list of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Rock and Roll [2] .
