World War II
At the beginning of the war, Seryugin continued to command this regiment as part of the 60th Infantry Division of the 12th Army of the Southwestern Front . In this position he participated in a border battle west of the city of Stanislav and in the Vinnitsa direction near the city of Uman .
In September 1941, he was appointed commander of the 124th Infantry Division , however, due to the division being surrounded, he did not reach it, after which he was appointed Chief of Staff of the 212th Infantry Division. As part of the 6th Army of the Southwestern Front, the division participated in the Donbass defensive and Barvenkovo-Lozovsky offensive operations. In May 1942, Seryugin was appointed deputy commander of this division, at the same time he served as chief of staff of the division. In this position he participated in the Kharkov battle , during which parts of the division were defeated and fought in the encirclement. In early June, the remnants of the division under his command managed to break out of the encirclement and cross to the eastern bank of the Seversky Donets River .
In July of 1942, Seryugin was appointed commander of the 160th Infantry Division , which distinguished itself in the 6th Army of the Voronezh Front in the Voronezh-Voroshilovgrad defensive operation .
In the subsequent units of the division as part of the Voronezh, and from December 1942, the Southwestern fronts, they actively operated during the Middle Don offensive operation .
In February 1943, Colonel Seryugin was wounded and was treated in a hospital.
On April 19, 1943, for the successful completion of combat missions, the division was transformed into the 89th Guards . In the subsequent part of the division under his command, they participated in the Donbass offensive operation , the battle of the Dnieper , in the Nikopol-Krivorozh , Bereznegovato-Snigirev and Odessa offensive operations.
September 1, 1943 Seryugin was awarded the military rank of Major General .
On October 19, 1943, for crossing the Dnieper River, Seryugin was represented by the commander of the 82nd Rifle Corps, General P.G. Kuznetsov to confer the title Hero of the Soviet Union [2] [3] , but the commander of the 37th Army, Lieutenant General M.N. Sharokhin reduced the award to the Order of Lenin , with which he was awarded January 19, 1944.
From June 2 to July 5, 1944 he served as commander of the 49th Rifle Corps of the 53rd Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front , which was in the second echelon of the army. After returning from the hospital to the commander of the corps, Major General G.N. Terentyev , from August 1944, Seryugin again commanded the 89th Guards Rifle Division, which, as part of the 5th shock army of the front, participated in the Iasi-Kishinev operation . Seryugin skillfully led the division’s units when breaking through the enemy’s defense in the Chisinau direction, repelling the counterattacks of his tanks. The entire personnel of the division showed exceptional courage and stamina, did not flinch when the enemy tanks went to the rear of the division. In these extremely difficult conditions of an offensive battle, Seryugin acted energetically and competently, boldly made decisions on putting together units to destroy manpower and military equipment of the Nazi forces. At the end of August, the division of the 5th shock army was withdrawn to the front reserve, then from September 5 it was in the reserve of the Supreme Command Headquarters , and at the end of October it was transferred to the 1st Belorussian Front and regrouped on the Magnushevsky bridgehead . As part of the army’s strike force, the division was active in the Warsaw-Poznan operation , during which it broke through a number of enemy defensive positions, went to the Oder River and, in collaboration with the main forces, captured the bridgehead northwest of the city of Küstrin . In the subsequent parts of the division, they fought for the retention of this bridgehead. Equally skillfully Seryugin managed the division during the Zelovsko-Berlin operation , where she, as part of the main strike group, broke through the enemy’s strongly fortified positions at the Zelovskiy Heights and participated in the assault on Berlin .
On May 3, 1945, for the assault on Berlin, Major General Seryugin was for the second time represented by the commander of the 26th Guards Rifle Corps, General P.A. Firsov, to be awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union [4] [5] , the commander of the 5th Assault Army, General Colonel N.E. Berzarin supported this view, but the higher management reduced the award to the Order of Suvorov II degree , which Seryugin was awarded on May 29, 1945.
