Biography

Received music education at Purcell School and Royal College of Music . He made his debut on a concert stage in the Purcell Room in 1981 , performing works by Franz Schubert . Julius Drake lives in London and specializes in chamber music. The pianist draws special attention to the songwriting of European composers of the XIX - XX centuries . Among the singers he constantly performed with were: Ian Bostridge [1] , Sergey Leiferkus , Alice Coote [2] , Paul Agnew , Gerald Finley, Joyce DiDonato , Anne Sofie von Otter . He performed at international music festivals in Kuhmo , Delft , Oxford and West Cork, at the festival “Schubertiade”, in Tanglewood [3] . The anniversary concert of Julius Drake’s 50th birthday was held at Wigmore Hall [4] . The pianist has repeatedly performed successfully in Russia [5]

The recordings of Julius Drake were carried out by the largest studios Hyperion, EMI Classics, Naxos, Onyx ... Among the most famous recording projects of the musician is the recording of all the songs of Franz Liszt . One of the disks of this cycle (where Angelika Kirchshlager acted as a partner of the pianist) won the prize of the Air Force music magazine.

Julius Drake was director of the International Chamber Music Festival in Perth ( Australia ) from 2000–2003 , and from 2009 to 2011 he was the artistic director of the festival in Machinlet ( Wales ). The pianist spent a series of vocal evenings called "Julius Drake and Friends" in the Middle Temple.

He took part in the creation of David Alden's film “The Winter Way” for Channel 4 (based on the Franz Schubert song cycle of the same name) in 1997, which was accompanied by Ian Bostridge . In 2000, the film was released on DVD [6] .

Pedagogical activity

Julius Drake regularly conducts master classes in Utrecht , Basel , Aldborough , Brussels , Toronto , at the Franz Schubert Institute in Baden (Lower Austria).

He is a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz (Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst, Graz, Austria, Professor Klavier-Vokalbegleitung) and professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London (Professor of Piano Accompaniment and Piano Ensemble Coaching) [7] . Visiting Professor, Royal Northern College of Music .
