Christianity in Latvia is the most widespread religion in the country .
According to the , in 2010, 1.25 million Christians lived in Latvia, which accounted for 55.7% of the population of this country [1] [2] . The Encyclopedia of “Religions of the World” by J. G. Melton estimates the share of Christians in 2010 at 69.9% (1.56 million believers) [3] .
In 2000, there were 958 Christian churches and places of worship in Latvia belonging to 25 different Christian denominations [4] .
In addition to Latvians , Christians are also the majority of Russians , Belarusians , Ukrainians , Poles , Lithuanians , Germans , Armenians , Moldavians , etc. living in the country.
As of 2015, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia is a member of the World Council of Churches [5] . The country's conservative evangelical churches are united in the Latvian Evangelical Alliance associated with the World Evangelical Alliance.
According to 2016, Christian religious communities in Latvia totaled 1,440,471 believers, including Lutheran - 700,469 believers, Catholic - 337,676 , Orthodox - 370,000 and Old Believers - 2,637 .
