History
The building of the Feriye Palace was designed by the famous architect Sarkis Balyan and commissioned in 1871 by Sultan Abdul-Aziz [1] . The palace was built for the needs of a large Sultan family. The palace, built in addition to the palaces of Chiragan and Dolmabahçe , was called "Ferie", which means secondary or auxiliary [2] . The complex, with an area of 3 km², consisted of three main buildings located on the waterfront, a building for concubines and a two-story building for servants in the courtyard and outbuildings.
On May 30, 1876, Sultan Abdul-Aziz was removed from the throne by his own ministers. He, along with his wives and children, was detained as a state criminal. He voluntarily moved to Férieux Palace, however, four days later he was found dead and was believed to have committed suicide [3] . After the death of Abdul-Aziz, and even after the abdication of the next sultan, when they received freedom, the Abudl-Aziz family continued to live in the palace.
The Ferye Palace complex continued to be the residence of the Sultan's family until March 3, 1924 , when the caliphate was abolished and all members of the Dynasty were subjected to forced deportation.
The palace buildings were empty until 1927 , when some of them occupied the Naval College [4] . [5] occupied the part of the buildings in . In 1967, part of the palace was reserved for the female section of the Galatasaray Lyceum , when the Lyceum began to teach according to a mixed gender program. Part of the complex in the northeast for many years remained unclaimed.
The Maritime College was transformed into the in 1981 and moved to Tuzla . The buildings were empty until 1982 , when they were given over to the Anatolian Higher Maritime School of Ziyi Kalvakan.
The buildings occupied by the female section of the Galatasaray School were transferred to the Galatasaray University in 1992 . The main building, originally known as the coastal palace of Ibrahim Tevfik Effendi [6] , is used by a number of university faculties, for example, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Communications, as well as various administrative offices [7] .
In 1995, the part of the palace, which was in disrepair, was restored by the Kabatash Education Fund and turned into a high-class restaurant “Feriye Lokantası” [8] .
The main building used by Galatasaray University was seriously damaged during a fire on January 22, 2013 [9] . The Ministry of Culture stated that the building will be completely restored and will continue to be used for educational purposes [10] .
