Jean-Louis Burnouf ( fr. Jean-Louis Burnouf ; September 14, 1775 , Urville, Manche department - May 8, 1844 , Paris) - French classic scholar, antiquologist, philologist and translator. The father of the oriental scientist Eugene Burnouf .

Biography
The son of a poor weaver. At an early age he remained an orphan. He was accepted as a scholarship holder at Collège d'Harcourt (now the Lyceum of Saint-Louis in Paris ), in 1792 he was awarded a university honorary award.
During the French Revolution , made a living doing business. In 1808, he was appointed professor of rhetoric at the Lyceum of Charlemagne, in 1817 he became professor of Latin eloquence at the College de France , in 1826 - the inspector general of the university and, finally, in 1830 - the main academic director.
He was also a librarian at the University of Sorbonne .
In 1836 he was elected a member of the Academy of Inscriptions and Fine Literature .
In addition to classical ancient languages, he studied Sanskrit under the direction of Alexander Hamilton .
In 1844 he died in Paris.
Scientific Activities
His many-edition textbooks have for many years served as the basis for teaching classical languages in France. Of them:
- “Méthode pour étudier la langue grecque” (Paris, 1814; latest edition, 1882);
- “Premiers principes de la grammaire grecque” (latest ed., 1879);
- Premiers principes de la grammaire latine (24th ed., 1883).
In Russian: “Practical grammar of the Greek language for Russians” (St. Petersburg, 1848); "Guide for the study of the Greek language" (St. Petersburg, 1861).
Burnuf owns the outstanding translations of Tacitus (1827-1833, in 6 volumes), Sallust , Cicero , the translation and commentary on the text “Panegyricus” by Pliny the Younger (1834; 3rd ed., 1845) and many other translations of classical works.
Translated into French the French version of "Mort d'Yadjnadatta" by Antoine-Leonard Chesi .
