About the album

In the summer of 2003, the main members of Gipsy Kings - guitarists and performers of the Reyes and Bagliardo families settled in a private estate in the small town of San Andre de Bugay in southern France , where, with the participation of album producer Craig Street, they recorded a new album, which was released by the record company Nonesuch Records March 16, 2004. For the first time in the past few years, the group recorded a disc with virtually no drums , no synthesizer and electric guitar , returning to the origins of flamenco .

The recordings of Roots included Nicholas and Canu , Andre , Pachay and Pablo Reyes , as well as Tonino , Diego and Paco Bagliardo . A bass player Greg Cohen (known for his work with Tom Waits , Marisa Monte and David Douglas ) made them a company. Drummer Ciro Baptista and accordionist Garth Hudson also contributed to the album.

β€œWe are tired of traveling to Paris , as for our previous five albums, with the same team and producers ,” said Andre Reyes. β€œThat was a wonderful change ,” added his brother Nicholas, lead singer of The Kings. β€œ We went back to simplicity, to the room that makes us feel at home, without all these machines.” "We played like in the good old days in a gypsy camp, with guitars and palms, and around an impromptu bonfire." Street said: β€œThese guys are really amazing musicians, which is not often found in music. All their intentions and goals, everything that you hear in these records - all this happened in that old house. "Kings" play live, only occasionally separately from solo or bass . "
