Biography
Born in the family of a specialist in canon law. He was educated at Westminster School and the Church of Christ in Oxford, where during his studies he met Gladstone and then from 1832 to 1835 worked as his clerk. In 1839 he became a member of the London Society of Civil Law Lawyers, and in 1841 received the right to practice his own law practice in Middle Temple, after which his career quickly went up.
In 1853-1857 he was a member of the House of Commons from Tavistock and carried out various reforms in the field of church relations; in 1857 he tried to re-enter the parliament from Coventry , but was defeated in the elections. He later held various judicial posts, including becoming the royal lawyer in 1858 and the chief lawyer of the Admiralty in 1862. In the same year he was knighted, and in 1881 became a baronet. In 1883 he retired.
