He grew up in Oulu and Tampere , suffering from the severity of his father and bullying his peers (the boy Aaro had a cleft lip ). Then he studied at the University of Helsinki , in 1917-1918. due to revolutionary events, he was forced to interrupt classes and served in the prison guard - these impressions formed the basis of several bright early poems. He graduated from the university in 1919, having received a natural science education with a specialization in geography, following in this respect in the footsteps of his father. He taught geography at school and university, published a number of geographical works - in particular, on the geological history of Saimaa and Puula lakes, was a co-author of several school textbooks. He also appeared in print as a literary and art critic.
Hellaakoski’s first collection, Poems (1916), was satirically anti-bourgeois in character and was coldly received by critics. However, books of the 1920s, especially the collection “Ice Mirror” ( Finnish. Jääpeili ; 1928), made him a prominent figure in Finnish poetry - one of the greatest adherents of modernist aesthetics. Hellaakoski's works during this period bore the traces of the influence of Apollinaire (including his calligrams) and Italian futurism.
He was married to Lempi Aaltonen, sister of the sculptor Väinö Aaltonen ; Aaltonen illustrated the verses of Hellaakoski and created his bronze portrait.
