The 20th Fighter Aviation Regiment was formed from 07/14/1941 to 08/18/1941 in the 8th reserve fighter aviation regiment of the Volga Military District (Bagai-Baranovka, Saratov Region) on Yak-1 aircraft from part of the flight personnel 20 Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 17th Mixed Aviation Division, arrived from the South-Western Front . He also received the name of the 20th Fighter Aviation Regiment.

Regiment's first victory

The first known air victory of the regiment in World War II was won on August 22, 1941: a German reconnaissance aircraft Hs-126 was shot down by a group of Yak-1 (leading to Mr. Gulyaev V. D.) in an air battle near Mglinsk.
