The length of the parrot is more than 30 cm, half falls on the tail. The main color of the plumage is green. There is a red spot on the forehead. The nape is yellowish, the wings and tail are bluish. A distinctive feature of this species are 2-6 elongated, black with red tips, feathers on the head, resembling horns.
It lives in New Caledonia and on the nearby islands.
Inhabit forests of kauri. Live in pairs or in small groups. They feed on seeds and nuts.
The destruction of old forests, the replacement of forests with coconut palm plantations, as well as the capture of birds by the islanders led to a sharp decline in the population of this parrot. If it is not possible to achieve their breeding in captivity, then they may disappear. Currently, there are 1,000 to 2,500 individuals.
The view includes two subspecies.
- Eunymphicus cornutus cornutus (Gmelin, 1788) is a nominative subspecies.
- Eunymphicus cornutus uvalensis (EL Layard & ELC Layard, 1882) - some taxonomy are considered as an independent species. It lives on the island of Uvea.
