EPrints is free software for creating custom web storages for building OAI [1] -compatible repositories . The software runs on Unix OS with the support of Apache , mySQL , Perl .

History
The creator of the project is Stephen Harnad. At the end of the 20th century, having sufficiently developed data exchange and storage systems (archives), the idea of open access to scientific publications in a scientific society appeared. To this end, the first meeting of the Open Archives initiative [2] was held . Professor Stephen Harnad and Les Carr were present at the meeting: the creation of tag metadata to centralize the archive and a quick search in the repository was discussed. It also proposed the idea to combine scientific electronic archives of local institutions, the creation of a common electronic library (location Santa Fe), which meant to increase the work of scientific structures [3] .
EPrints software was developed at the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, located in the UK. The project was developed jointly with the TARDis project, whose goal was to develop an electronic archive for academic institutions [4] .
The development of EPrints begins in April 2000, led by Rob Tansley. And in June of the same year, EPrints beta 1 was released, and an electronic archive of Cogprints was created. [2]
Further, a set of development progress by year: [2]
2000
- In September, the 2nd beta version of EPrints will be released.
- In November, the change of leadership: Rob Tansley leaves, replaced by Christopher Gutteridge. EPrints version 1.0 was released the same month, along with support for OAI 0.2
2001
- In January, version 1.1 is released with the support of OAI 1.0. The development of EPrints 2 begins.
- Mike Jewell joins the project, and concentrates work on the software installer. (June)
- In August, the Anchovy version (Anchovy) - EPrints 2 Alpha-1.

Project members
At the beginning of 2015, the participants of the EPrints project are:
- Leslie Carr - Project Director
- Christopher Guterridge - Lead Developer
- Tim Brodie - Developer
Work with EPrints
This product is designed to build and manage Open Archives, so it meets several requirements for compliance with digital libraries :
- creation of electronic archives with various information resources
- quick access to electronic database
- storage and open publication of scientific papers to a wide range of users
- possibility of information exchange
Since the goal of the project was to consolidate all published data in various institutions through EPrints, the project registered the repository for the collection of information:
- existing and existing repositories
- amount of information held by the repository
- search all repositories , in order to increase the effectiveness of scientific research [5]
Under the archive accept - storage of digital documents in the public domain , by means of a publicly available site. Also in the archive are stored metadata records describing these documents. [five]
Each document type has its own set of metadata . The OAI protocol used recommends that archives use the metadata entry element to associate the record with the URL identifier , URN , DOI , etc. of the associated document (object). For this purpose, the mandatory format provides the attribute "identifier" (DC.Identifier) [4] .
The project is freely available and has technical support. The project website has complete documentation for installing and using EPrints. [6]
Distributions
EPrints are being developed on Redhat Linux (like Fedora Core, Enterprise). EPrints is used on any number of Linux distributions and other UNIX-like systems, including OS-X. Supported by Microsoft, it works on Windows Vista and XP.
