Rosario ( Spanish: Rosario ) - a city in Argentina , in the province of Santa Fe . With a population of 909,397 [1] inhabitants ( 2001 census ) is the third largest in the country, after Buenos Aires and Cordoba . The city is located on the banks of the Parana River , 300 km northwest of Buenos Aires. Together with the suburbs and the nearest cities it forms an agglomeration with a population of 1,121,441 people.

Rosario is the birthplace of Che Guevara , as well as a number of famous football players and coaches, including Lionel Messi , Angel Di Maria , Mauro Icardi , Leandro Fernandez , Cesar Luis Menotti , Marcelo Bielsu and many others.

Geography
The city is located on the right bank of the Parana River . In the south, the Arroyo-Saladillo River serves as the border between Rosario and the town of Villa-Gobernador Galves . In the northern part of the city, the Arroyo-Luduña River flows into Parana.
History
The colonial settlement on the site where the city is now located has been known since the 17th century. The name of the settlement means the Rosary - the traditional Catholic rosary, as well as the prayer recited on these rosaries, and translated from Latin means "wreath of roses." Since 1751, the name of the first burgomaster is known - Santiago de Montenegro ( Spanish: Santiago de Montenegro ). In 1812, the general national flag of Argentina was raised for the first time by General Manuel Belgrano ( Spanish Manuel Belgrano ), a monument in the city center reminds of this event. Until the middle of the XVIII century, the development of the city was very slow, and only since 1880, when laws on emigration to Argentina from Europe were simplified, a rapid population growth and industrial development began in Rosario. By 1887, 50,914 people lived in the city, and in 1926 - already 407,000, of which 47% were born abroad (Italians, Germans, Croats, Poles and others). In May 1969, an uprising broke out in the city against the dictatorial regime in the country [2] .
Economics
Rosario is a major center for meat-cold-producing [3] , flour-grinding and leather-shoe industry, steel rolling [4] , and for the final processing of yerbamate [5] . Once, the city was one of the centers of Argentina for the production of small arms. So, the Domingo Mateu enterprise produced machine guns, assault rifles ( FARA 83 , etc.), submachine guns ( FMK-3 , etc.), pistols, grenade launchers ( MARA ) [6] .
The residential complexes Dolphins Guarani and Torre Aqualina are the highest buildings in Argentina (outside Buenos Aires).
Transport
For the north-east of Argentina, the city is an important railway junction and seaport ; sea vessels reach Rosario along the Parana River. The main port of the country for the export of grain [4] , the second - for freight turnover [7] .
Plans are underway for the construction of the TAVe high-speed railway (Buenos Aires - Rosario - Cordoba) [8] , but, in connection with the deplorable financial situation of the country, the project has not progressed further exploration work.
Rosario is one of the three cities in Argentina that operate trolleybuses . In 2017, the rolling stock was replenished with twelve [9] new Russian-made Megapolis trolley buses [10] .
Sport
The Rosario Central football clubs (founded in 1893) and the Newells Old Boys (founded in 1903), which in total won more than 10 Argentina champion titles, perform in Rosario.
The city hosted the Southern Cross Games of 1982 . In 1978, the matches of the World Cup were held in Rosario. The Argentinean rugby national team regularly performs in the city; the largest field hockey tournaments are held.
The Dakar 2014 rally started in Rosario, and also finished the Dakar 2016 rally .
