The 166th fighter aviation regiment was formed in the Kiev Special Military District (Uman) from October 8, 1940 to January 20, 1941 as part of the 44th fighter aviation division on I-16 aircraft.

Rename a shelf

The 166th Fighter Aviation Regiment for exemplary performance of combat missions and the courage and heroism shown on the basis of the Order of the NCO of the USSR [1] was renamed the 88th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment.

First regiment victory in aerial combat

The first known air victory of the regiment in the Great Patriotic War was won on June 26, 1941: Lieutenant Yushin I.G. in an air battle near the city of Kamenetz-Podolsky shot down enemy reconnaissance Henschel Hs 126 .
