Biography

Between 1490 and 1496, the ruler of the Zeta principality was George IV Chernoevich , the elder brother of Stephen, who actively corresponded with other Christian states with the goal of creating an anti-Ottoman coalition. Stefan betrayed his brother and reported his actions to the Ottoman Turks. George Chernoevich agreed to recognize vassal dependence on the Ports if the Sultan recognizes him as the ruler of the Zeta. The Ottoman sanjakbey Feriz Bey demanded that George Chernoevich come to him in Shkoder (Scutari) or flee from the Zeta.

In 1496, a large Ottoman army under the command of Feriz Bey occupied the Principality of Zeta. George Chernoevich was forced to flee to the Venetian possessions. His younger brother Stefan remained at home, counting on the protection of the Turks, but they only used him to gain control of the Zeta. Having captured Zeta, the Ottoman Turks allowed Stefan Chernoevich to remain the owner of family estates. However, he ruled only nominally, the Turks collected taxes from the local population.

In 1497, the Ottoman military leader Feriz Bey occupied the Grbal region and subordinated the Ottoman administration directly to it, although formally it was part of the Zeta. In 1499, Feriz Bay officially attached the Principality of Zeta to his Sanjak Shkoder [1] [1] . Prince Stefan Chernoevich ceased to arrange the Ottomans as ruler. Feriz Bey began to suspect Prince Stephen of secret contacts with the Republic of Venice. By order of Feriz Bey, Prince Stefan Chernoevich arrived in Shkoder , where he was imprisoned. Stefan probably died in Turkish custody, as he is no longer mentioned in historical sources. According to some authors, after his brother fled from the Zeta, Stefan served only in the Ottoman cavalry (Sipahi), in 1499 he went to Hilandar and became a monk , adopting the monastic name Marco [2] .
