History

It was founded in 1946 by the efforts of Archbishop Makarii (Oksiyuk) as a journal of the Lviv diocese and was originally called “The Archbishop's Herald” with the headline “The Organ of the Lviv-Ternopil Eparchial Administration” [2] .

In 1948, the name was changed to “Orthodox Newsletter” (“Orthodox Herald”) with a subtitle: “The publication of the bishops of Western Ukraine, Transcarpathia and Bukovina, under the leadership of the Exarch of All Ukraine Metropolitan of Kiev” [2] .

In 1962, at the height of the Khrushchev’s anti-religious campaign, the publication of the magazine was discontinued [1] .

In 1968, the publication was resumed in Kiev by the decision of the Exarch of Ukraine, Metropolitan of Kiev and Galitsky Filaret (Denisenko) .

In 1990, due to the transformation of the Ukrainian Exarchate into the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the subtitle of the publication changed to: “Edition of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church” [2] .

In 1992, after leaving the schism, Metropolitan Filaret (Denisenko), the magazine became the official periodical of the non - canonical UOC of the Kiev Patriarchate [3] .

In 1996, the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church resumed publication of the Orthodox Herald magazine.

In December 2010, after a four-year break, the first issue of the updated Orthodox Bulletin of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church was published, prepared by the editorial staff of the Church Orthodox Newspaper. Hegumen Longin (Chernukha) said:

At the end of April 2007, we had a reorganization of the publishing work - we set ourselves the task of improving the “Orthodox Church Newspaper”, setting a solid schedule for its publication — twice a month in a bilingual version (in Russian and Ukrainian). Since the newspaper is already in subscription, we are bound by obligations not only to subscribers, our readers, but also to the printing house, enterprises and organizations for distributing the publication. We had to get into a fairly tight schedule and rhythm of work on the Church Orthodox Newspaper.

In the context of such a reorganization, the collective of the Orthodox Bulletin was formed - we saw that we have the potential to publish two printed organs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church: the Church Orthodox Newspaper will acquire a more missionary character, focus on people who are just getting church or not yet came to the Church, and the magazine is designed for a church-bound reader - above all, clergy, clergy, psalmists, wardens, church accountants, regents, teachers Sunday schools, icon painters, teachers of Christian disciplines in secondary schools [4] .

The updated "Orthodox Herald" will be published quarterly (four times a year) on 96 pages (the first issue is 80 pages) and will be focused primarily on church audiences. [5] .
