Biography
Eva Boyd was born in Belhaven, North Carolina , then moved to Brighton Beach in Brooklyn , New York City . As a teenager, she worked as a maid and worked as a nanny with a child of the writing duo Carol King and Jerry Goffin [1] . There is a widespread story that the authors were inspired to create a song by Eva’s amusing manner of dancing, and that they recorded this song with her just as a demo, intending to release it later by Dee Sharp . However, Carol King herself in an interview with the National Public Radio (NPR) shortly after the death of Little Willow denied this version. According to her, from the very beginning they represented Eve as a girl who has a good voice, so they decided to record this song with her.
Music producer Don Kirshner , who worked on Dimension Records , liked the song and it was released as a gramophone single [1] . The song reached number one on the US national chart on August 25, 1962. It has sold over one million copies and has been certified gold [1] .
In the same year, Iva’s relationship with her boyfriend inspired Goffin and King to write the song “He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss)” (“He hit me (I took it like a kiss)”), which was performed by The Crystals . They found out that Eva’s boyfriend beats her, and when asked why she tolerates this, she said that he behaves this way because he loves [2] .
Eva Boyd died of cancer at the age of 59 [3] .
