“Kagbeni” ( Nepali. - ) is a Nepali full-length film - a thriller based on the story of the English writer William Wimarck Jacobs . The premiere took place in January 2008 . The film takes place in the Nepalese village of Kagbeni , located in the Himalayas in the upper Kali Gandaki River .

Content

Story

Krishna returns to his native village after a long stay at work in Malaysia . With his friend Ramesh, he goes on business to the village of . On the way, friends stop for the night in a barn, where they meet a mysterious hermit . Krishna invites him to the fire and gives him a blanket brought from Malaysia. As a token of gratitude, the hermit gives Krishna a magical monkey foot. According to the hermit, the paw is able to fulfill the wishes of its owner, however, if another person uses the paw, then the fulfillment of his desires will be accompanied by troubles.

On the way back, Ramesh learns that Krishna is getting married with Tara, the girl he loves and whom he unsuccessfully seeks. Ramesh secretly takes a monkey foot and makes a wish ...

Filming

 
Kali Gandaki Valley, in which the film takes place

In October 2006, the film crew arrived in the Kali Gandaki Valley. Filming lasted about a month and took place in the city of Jomsom , the villages of Kagbeni , , Shyang and their environs.

For filming, a digital video camera was used. Periodically, technical difficulties arose due to the fact that the filmmakers did not have experience with this camera. Once the crew members had to walk for a few hours to the nearest settlement in order to consult the camera manufacturer from an Internet cafe [1] .

Criticism

The film received positive reviews from critics. The Himalayan Times called the Kagbeni “a breakthrough among Nepalese films” [2] , and the noted that the film was “beautifully shot, charmingly played, carefully staged.” [3]

Box office fees

During the rental at the cinemas, Kagbeni collected 30 million rupees , the highest for Nepalese cinema, with 4 million rupees being collected in the first week. The film also had good performance abroad, especially in the United States , Britain and Hong Kong , where a significant number of immigrants from Nepal live.
