Military Service
In 1812 he graduated from the Second Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg . He served as a lieutenant in the 15th artillery brigade, was fired from the post with the production of staff captains .
In the civil service - the head of the Protestant branch of the Department of Foreign Confessions of the Main Department of Spiritual Affairs, titular adviser.
Then he was an artillery teacher at the Officers' classes of the Artillery School (1827-1832), staff captain of the guard in the Life Guard of the 1st Artillery Brigade (1829), captain of the guard (1830), artillery professor at the Military Academy with the rank of colonel (1832-1836), inspector classes of the Mikhailovsky Artillery School (1834), professor of the Mikhailovsky Artillery Academy (1840), head of weapons factories.
From 1841 - major general, from 1851 - lieutenant general of artillery.
He was buried at the Volkovsky Lutheran cemetery in St. Petersburg.
Scientific and pedagogical activity
In 1827, E.K. Wessel was invited to set up an artillery course for the officer classes of the Artillery School (now the Peter the Great Military Academy of Strategic Rocket Forces ). With great erudition and teaching abilities, he soon completed the task. I reworked the course program and published a number of works reflecting the level of artillery knowledge of that time. E.K. Wessel belonged to an innovation in the practical training of students of the school: during the camp period, each of them had to participate in training firing from guns.
After the appointment of E. Kh. Wessel in 1834, he conducted the first reform of the educational process, which contributed to the improvement of the training of cadets and officers.
E.K. Wessel was the first in Russia to be awarded the title of professor of artillery sciences.
In 1830, he wrote the first artillery manual in Russia, Notes on Artillery, a long time considered a classic work and used not only by the artillery school, but also by all Russian artillery. In addition, in the 1850s he published The Artillery Course for Military Schools.
He is the author of works in the field of artillery science, textbooks on artillery technology, including rocket, combat and signal missiles.
Wessel's student was K.I. Konstantinov , a scientist and inventor in the field of artillery, rocketry, instrumentation and automation, and a future lieutenant general. [one]
During the management of the arms factories, E. Kh. Wessel not only raised the domestic arms production in technical terms, but also especially cared for improving the living conditions of the workers, and established schools for their children.
