Create

The 296th Fighter Aviation Regiment began to be formed in February 1941 by the Odessa Military District ( Dnepropetrovsk ) as part of the 66th Fighter Air Division . It was supposed to complete the I-16 aircraft at the expense of the 67th IAP in connection with the rearmament of the latter on LaGG-3 . By the beginning of the war, the formation of the regiment was not completed: there were no commander of the regiment and flight personnel, except for two squadron commanders. The technical staff of the regiment is equipped with 20%, no planes arrived. In June 1941, a group of 15 pilots on I-16 aircraft headed by captain N. I. Baranov was allocated from the 160th reserve aviation regiment to equip the regiment. In early July, the regiment received I-16 aircraft together with pilots from Batayskoye VAShP . The formation of the regiment was fully completed by August 1941.
