Biography

Rebling, born in the family of a Prussian officer, began to study piano at the age of seven. He took lessons from Lydia Lenz and in 1929 won the first prize of the competition of performers of the German Union of Artists. Upon graduation, Rebling studied music with Friedrich Bloom , Kurt Sachs and Erich Moritz von Hornbostel , and also studied German studies and philosophy at the University of Berlin . In 1932, he saw Ernst Bush and Hans Eisler on the stage, got acquainted with the work of the Dutch art critic Leo Ballet and became interested in Marxism . He also met Gyorgy Lukacs and Andor Gabor . In 1933, he witnessed the fire in the Reichstag and, under the influence of these events, joined the Communist Party of Germany . In 1935 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic “Sociological Foundations of Stylistic Changes in German Music in the Middle of the 18th Century”.

In 1936, Rebling, who was in opposition to the National Socialists , was forced to emigrate to The Hague . In the same year, a joint work by Rebling and Ballet “The Bourgeoisization of German Art, Literature and Music in the 18th Century” was published in Strasbourg and Leiden . In 1937, Rebling went on tour with a small dance troupe to Java and Sumatra as an accompanist. In the same year, Eberhard Rebling met his future wife Lin Yaldati .

Rebling took an active part in the musical culture of the Netherlands as a pianist, music critic and musicologist. He was published in music publications, gave lectures at popular universities and at the Higher School of Art in The Hague.

At the beginning of 1943, Eberhard Rebling acquired a house in the Netherlands on a dummy name to give refuge to more than 20 Jewish refugees. Shelter was discovered in 1944, Rebling was arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to death. He managed to escape, but most of the Jews living in the house were arrested and sent to concentration camps. Among them was his wife Lin, who survived imprisonment in concentration camps Westerbork , Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen . In 1945, the couple reunited. Six of the Jews hiding from them could not survive the Holocaust . For their help to Jewish refugees on October 11, 2007, in the Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem, Eberhard Rebling was awarded the title of the Righteous of the World . In 1945, Rebling met Otto Heinrich Frank , the father of Anne Frank . With performances in memory of Anne, Frank Rebling and Lin Yaldati traveled to West Germany , Israel and the United States .

At the end of the British occupation of the Netherlands, Rebling was appointed music editor of the daily newspaper of the Communist Party of the Netherlands De Waarheid . In 1946, he joined the CPN.

In 1951, the Minister of Education of the GDR, Paul Wandel, persuaded Rebling to move to the GDR . In 1952, Rebling with his wife and daughters Katinka and Yalda settled in East Berlin . In 1960, Eberhard Rebling joined the SED .

In 1952-1959, Rebling worked as chief editor of the newspaper Musik und Gesellschaft , in 1957 he became one of the chief editors of the music magazine Melodie und Rhythmus . In 1959, he received the title of professor and the post of rector of the Berlin Higher School of Music , which thanks to his efforts received the name of Hans Eisler . Rebling was interested in ballet and, after numerous trips and retirements, released in 1976 several detailed works on the dance art of India and Indonesia . In 2002, he transferred his archive to the Berlin Academy of Arts .

Since 1963, Rebling was elected a deputy of the People’s Chamber of the GDR , was a member of the Research Council for Professional Music Education at the Ministry of Culture of the GDR. Member of the Peace Council of the GDR and the Presidium of the Cultural Union of the GDR , until the end of his life was a member of the Party of Democratic Socialism and subsequently of the Left Party , he spoke with memories of the events of his life. He was buried next to his wife at the Dorotheenstadt cemetery in Berlin.

The youngest daughter of Eberhard Rebling Yalda became a singer, the eldest daughter Katinka is a violinist and musicologist.
