Cowpens, Ansis

Ansis Albert Kaupens ( Latvian. Ansis Alberts Kaupēns ; until November 2, 1895 - May 6, 1927) - Latvian robber and killer; perhaps the most famous Latvian criminal of the interwar period.

Born in 1895, but the exact date of birth is unknown; He was baptized on November 2 in the Vecplatone volost [1] . In the 1910s, he served first in the Russian Imperial and then in the Latvian Army [2] (in the 11th Dobele Infantry Regiment with the rank of sergeant [3] ), in 1920 he defected. The first robbery was committed on November 29, 1920, the last on May 26, 1926. During this period of time he committed more than 30 robberies and 19 murders. Sometimes he even managed to stop trains, but usually he robbed on the roads. On May 6, 1927, he was executed by hanging. He was buried in the secular volost.

The life of Kaupens became the basis for several books and films [4] , such as A. Grutups’s book “Tiesāšanās kā māksla” and the film “Kaupēns” based on the motives.
