Biography

Gunter Gaus - the son of a merchant, grew up in Braunschweig. After graduation, he studied Germanic studies and history at the University of Munich , while doing journalism. In the 1950s and 1960s, Gaus worked in several daily and weekly publications, including Der Spiegel and Süddeutsche Zeitung , where he served as a political editor in 1961-1965.

Gunter Gaus gained fame thanks to a series of television programs "About the Person", which premiered on April 10, 1963 on the ZDF channel. During the interview, Gaus created portraits of his guests: politicians, scientists, artists, and Gaus himself often remained behind the scenes.

In 1965–1968, Gaus held the position of program director of radio and television broadcasting Südwestfunk , and in 1966 also supervised the work of the political television magazine Report Baden-Baden . In the mid-1960s, he published several books in which he clearly reflected his attitude to the current political situation, and in 1969 he was invited to the post of editor-in-chief of Der Spiegel magazine . Gaus and the publication under his leadership supported the eastern policy of the social liberal coalition in the German government.

In 1973, Gaus declared himself in politics, taking the post of state secretary in the department of the Federal Chancellor of Germany in order to become the first head of the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany in the GDR after the entry into force of the Founding Treaty and the establishment of a permanent mission in 1974. Gaus worked in this position until 1981, becoming the main negotiator from the FRG with the government of the GDR and ensuring the significant development of relations between the two German states. Gaus should be credited with the 17 concluded agreements that provided, for example, the construction of a highway between Hamburg and Berlin and the simplification of transit traffic between West Berlin and Germany through the territory of the GDR .

In 1976, Günther Gaus joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany . In 1981, having transferred the powers of the Permanent Representative to Klaus Bölling , Gunter Gaus served for some time as a senator for science and art in Berlin. After the defeat of the SPD in the elections to the city council of Berlin in 1981, Gunter Gaus again turned to journalistic activities.

In the 1980s, Gaus wrote several books on the situation in Germany, relations between the two German states and security policy. Gaus's work has been awarded several awards. Since 1990, Gunter Gaus has co-authored the left-wing weekly newspaper Freitag and the monthly science magazine Blätter für deutsche und internationale Politik . Gaus was critical of the reunification of Germany , repeatedly pointing to the lack of "internal unity."

In 2001, Günther Gaus withdrew from the ranks of the SPD because of the statement by Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder about the "unconditional support of the US government led by George W. Bush ."

Until his death in May 2004, Gaus lived in Reinbek near Hamburg. Gunter Gaus was buried at the Dorotheenstadt cemetery in Berlin. The remaining unfinished memoirs of Gaus were published in the year of his death.

Gunter Gaus Bettin's daughter also devoted herself to journalism, since 1999 she has been a political correspondent for the Berlin newspaper die tageszeitung .
