Biography
Kurt Yurtstam was born on July 11, 1933 in the town of Alingsås . His mother died shortly after his birth, his father was unemployed, so Kurt lived with his grandmother. After graduating from the seven-year school, he studied at the upholsterer-draper, then worked for some time in nurseries, as well as a truck driver and stevedore in the port of Gothenburg .
Kurt's grandfather studied ornithology, his grandmother was an amateur entomologist, Kurt himself was interested in plants from childhood, began to attend botanical excursions of the Gothenburg Botanical Society. There he met Jon Eriksson and thanks to him began the study of corticoid fungi, soon brought him his first previously unknown species. Eriksson provided Yortstam with a good microscope and mycological literature, in 1969 they published their first joint article describing 4 new species of Hyphodontia .
To read scientific papers, Kurt had to learn English, German, French, as well as Latin to write diagnoses of species on his own.
Kurt was one of the co-authors of the eight-sum report on corticoid fungi of Northern Europe, for some time he was a research fellow at the University of Gothenburg in connection with writing this work. He then worked at the University of Oslo , identified the mushrooms brought by Ruwarden from Africa and South America. After Patuyar , Berkeley and Bresadola, not a single major work was published with descriptions of corticoid fungi of the tropics, and even an exemplary list of species did not exist. Yurtstam and Ryuvarden had to study all type specimens stored in their herbaria, and prepare such a report independently. In the late 1980s, the Yurtstam worked for some time at the Kew Botanical Gardens .
Upon his return to Sweden, the University of Gothenburg awarded Yurtstam an honorary doctorate.
He died on December 9, 2009 in Alingsås.
