Biography
Ernest Gifford, Jr. was born January 17, 1920 in the city of Riverside in California in the family of Ernest Gifford and Mildred Campbell Gifford. He studied at Riverside College, where he was influenced by the biologist and ecologist Edmund Yeager . In 1938 he graduated from Riverside High Polytechnic School and entered the University of California at Berkeley . In 1942 he graduated with a bachelor's degree, after which he served as the tank commander in the army of General Patton , took part in the Battle for the Ledge . In 1946, he rose to the rank of major, after which he remained in reserve until 1973, when, as a colonel, he resigned.
In 1949, Gifford received a Ph.D., then worked as an employee and assistant professor at the University of Davis Agricultural Experimental Station. In 1962, he became a full professor of agricultural and environmental sciences. In 1987 he retired, after which he continued to teach for five years.
In 1959, Gifford and Ralph Stockking observed the presence of thymidine in plant chloroplasts , which later became the first evidence of the existence of own DNA in these organoids.
From 1963 to 1967 and from 1974 to 1978, Gifford headed the University of Berkeley's Botanical Department. In 1975-1979 he was president of the Botanical Society of America (BSA).
He died on June 14, 2006 as a result of complications caused by Alzheimer's disease .
Honors
Ernest Gifford was awarded the USA Bronze Star for his services during World War II.
In 1981, Gifford won the Merit Award to the Botanical Society of America; in 2006, he became one of the scientists who received the Centenary's Society Award. In 1956, Ernest attended Harvard University under the National Research Service program. In 1966, Gifford worked in France under the Fulbright program . He was also the holder of a Guggenheim scholarship .
In 2005, at the University of Davis, the E. Gifford Garden of the Cygnus was founded.
