Leon (Nicaragua)

León ( Spanish León or Spanish Santiago de los Caballeros de León ) is the second largest city in Nicaragua , after the capital Managua , the administrative center of the Leon department. In 2005, the population reached 145 thousand inhabitants.

History

  • The city was founded in 1524
  • In 1609 destroyed by an earthquake
  • It was rebuilt in 1610, 32 km from the old place, which is now called Leon Viejo .

In 1812, the university was founded (hereinafter - the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua in Leon) [1] .

In 1839 , Leon became the capital of Nicaragua, but in 1858 the capital was moved to Managua. Nevertheless, until the end of the XIX century the city remained one of the main political centers of the country, and subsequently retained the importance of a trade and economic center [2] . In 1883, a railway was laid through the city.

  • President Anastasio Somosa Garcia was mortally wounded in Leon on September 21, 1956 . The shooter was the young poet Rigoberto Lopez Perez .

In the 1970s, two of the country's eight newspapers were published in Leon - the newspaper Centroamericano (El Centroamericano) and Universal (El Universal) [1] .

  • On August 25, 1981, by order of the country's governing Council, the city was awarded the honorary title “Hero City” , and, given that the revolutionary government began its activity here in the first liberated city on July 17, 1979 , the city was also awarded the title “First Capital of Nicaragua”.
