Biography

In the family where Alexander Vasilyevich Zhitkov was born, there were 8 children, including the elder brother Nikolai (1829–?) And the younger ones: Vladimir (1836–1899), Apollo (1839–?), Peter (1840–?) And Stepan (1853– 1921) - father of the writer Boris Zhitkov . Vladimir became rear admiral; Peter was the vowel of the Nikolaev City Council.

Alexander Vasilievich Zhitkov entered the service as a cadet on September 3, 1849; April 16, 1852 was enrolled in the Black Sea school of naval cadets and May 6, 1853 promoted to the rank of midshipman. On the ship “ Rostislav ” [1] participated in the Sinop battle and “for the exact performance of duties and the presence of the spirit” was promoted to lieutenant on December 18, 1853. In 1854-1855 he commanded the Volyn redoubt during the defense of Sevastopol , was awarded the orders of St. Anne of the 3rd degree with swords and St. Anne of the 4th degree with the inscription "For courage." In 1857, the Boa constrictor moved from Kronstadt to Sevastopol . In 1858 he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislav of the 2nd degree. Three years later, on March 28, 1861, he was dismissed for service on commercial vessels; January 1, 1863 promoted to lieutenant commander ; January 1, 1873 - in the rank of captain of the 2nd rank; January 1, 1875 - captain of the 1st rank. After returning to active service on April 16, 1878, in the same year he was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir with the 4th degree with a bow for the 25-year-old immaculate service in officer ranks. Upon dismissal on December 29, 1880, he was promoted to Rear Admiral .

He lived in Odessa. He served in ROPiT ("Russian Society of Steamboats and Trade") [2] .

He died on January 15, 1901 . He was buried at the Old Cemetery in Odessa [3] [4] .
