Joseph Holt ( born Joseph Holt ; January 6, 1807 - August 1, 1894 ) is an American lawyer and statesman who served as Minister of War and Postmaster General in the office of James Buchanan . During the Civil War and until 1875, he was a judge and took part in the trial of the conspirators who committed the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865.
