Bridge History
The decision to build the bridge was made by the Kiev City Council in 1902. In 1909, work began on the creation of the alley. At the same time, E. Paton developed a project, a hydraulic engineer With Kokolik, reconnaissance drilling was carried out, the construction of 12 pallets under the bridge supports was carried out under the supervision of engineer A. Straus.
On October 31, 1909, under the guidance of construction contractor engineer M. Smirnov, the connection of metal structures manufactured at the Greter, Krivanenko and K factory from domestic metal began. The quality of the metal was tested in the laboratory of the mechmaster of the Kiev Polytechnic Institute .
Riveting works were completed on March 31, 1910, construction and installation works - on August 19, 1910. November 22, 1910 the bridge was put into operation. Work on the improvement of the adjacent territory under the leadership of engineer P. Lebedev continued until the fall of 1911.
By the beginning of the 1980s, the bridge was badly damaged due to corrosion, as a result of which Ukrpoekststalkonstruktsiya was reconstructed. In 1983, the bridge was actually rebuilt as an exact copy of the previous one: its old structures were dismantled and transferred to the museum of folk architecture and life of the Middle Naddnipryanshchyna in Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky , and instead new parts were installed made at the Dnepropetrovsk metal construction plant .
On May 7, 2013, a monument was erected near the bridge to lovers - Italian Luigi Pedutto from the city of Castel San Lorenzo in Campania and Ukrainian Mokrina Yurzuk from a village in the Kamenetz-Podolsk Region (the authors of the monument are sculptors Alexander Morgatsky and Grigory Kostyukov [1] [2] ) A prisoner of war soldier and a Ukrainian taken out for forced labor met in 1943 in an Austrian prisoner of war camp. Love helped them survive in the camp hell, but after the war ended, Mokrina was taken home, and the lovers were separated for a long time; they met only in 2004 - at the Moscow TV show " Wait for me " (the exact moment of this meeting was captured by the authors of the monument). After that, Luigi began to visit the newly-found lover twice a year. The sick Mokrina Andreevna could not come to the opening of the sculptural composition “Love Story” (instead of herself, she sent two granddaughters and a great-grandson to Kiev), and Luigi flew in; in the same year, on August 10, he died of a heart attack [3] [4] [5] .
During the protests of 2013-2014 , in January 2014 , the bridge was seriously damaged when the protesters bombarded it with burning tires. So they blocked the way for representatives of the special services , who strove to cross the bridge to bypass on Grushevskogo Street and European Square . About 3 meters of a wooden covering of the bridge burned down.
Later, the affected parts of the bridge were restored by craftsmen from the city of Kolomyia , and a memorial sign [6] [7] appeared on the bridge in memory of the protests.
