The death penalty in Pakistan

The death penalty in Pakistan was used regularly until the 2008 moratorium . Since then, the death penalty has never been applied. Previously, Pakistan was one of the leaders in the use of the death penalty in the world [1] . The method of execution in Pakistan is hanging .

According to Amnesty International , in 2013, about 8,000 people were on death row in Pakistan [2] . The decision to pardon them can be made by the president of the country.

After the Taliban attacked a school in Peshawar , in which at least 141 people died, the government of Pakistan announced that it lifts the moratorium on the death penalty [3] . On December 21, 2014, Akhlas Akhlak, a citizen of the Russian Federation, was executed with three accomplices sentenced by the Pakistani military tribunal to death in 2005 [4] .
