Biography

Film career

Jones’s impressive career in Hollywood began after she divorced actor Robert Walker and made contact with the most influential producer of those years, David O. Selznick ( King Kong , Gone With the Wind , Rebecca ), and decided to come up with a pseudonym for her.

In many ways, with the assistance of Selznik, she was awarded the Oscar in 1944 for Best Actress for her work in the film Bernadette 's Song . At the same ceremony, among her rivals, Jennifer was her friend Ingrid Bergman , who was nominated for her role in the film " For Whom the Bell Tolls ". Jennifer apologized to Ingrid, who answered her: "No, Jennifer, your Bernadette was better than my Maria." The following year, Ingrid Bergman received an Oscar for her role in the film Gas Light .

Among the most striking films with the participation of Jones - “A Duel in the Sun ” (1946) with Gregory Peck , “Madame Bovary” (1949) with James Mason , “ Love is the most magnificent thing in the world ” (1955) with William Holden , “ Farewell, weapons! "(1957) with Rock Hudson . After Selznik’s death in 1965, Jennifer Jones married one of America’s richest people, industrialist Norton Simon. After that, she practically stopped acting in films, taking part in only two films - “Angel, angel, we are going down” (1969) and “ Hell in Heaven ” (1974).

Personal life

From her first marriage, Jennifer gave birth to two sons - Robert Walker, Jr. (born April 15, 1940) and Michael Walker (born March 13, 1941). They both became actors. After starting an affair with David Salsnik, Jennifer broke up with her husband Robert in November 1943. The divorce was officially filed in June 1945.

The wedding with Salznik took place on July 13, 1949. The marriage lasted until David's death on June 22, 1965. Jennifer's only child from this marriage, Mary Jennifer Salznik, committed suicide by jumping out of a window from the 20th floor in 1976. This prompted Jennifer to become interested in mental health issues.

On May 29, 1971, Jennifer Jones married the multimillionaire Norton Simon, who was engaged, in addition to industry, in collecting and charity. His son Robert also committed suicide in 1969. The couple lived together until June 1993, when Norton Simon passed away.

Jennifer Jones survived breast cancer . Actress Susan Strasberg, who died of breast cancer, named her daughter Jennifer Robin Jones in honor of the actress.

Jones spent the last years of her life in Southern California with her son. She did not give anyone an interview and did not appear in public. Jennifer Jones died on December 17, 2009 at the age of 90 in her home in Malibu .
