Biography

Karl Starbek was born December 26, 1863 in the parish of St. Olav near Norrkoping . From school he was influenced by the botanist Karl Lönnberg went with him on botanical excursions. He studied at Uppsala University , participated in excursions conducted by Rutger Cernander . In 1894 he received a doctorate in philosophy, in his dissertation he considered mushrooms from the herbarium of Elias Fries . In 1895-1896 he taught there as an associate professor.

From 1897 to 1902, Starbek taught at a high school in Hudiksvall , then, until 1928, was an associate professor of natural history and chemistry in Gavle .

Until the 1910s, Starbek was engaged in active political activity, until 1917 he was a member of the liberal party "Association of Freethinkers." From 1902 to 1914 he was a member of parliament. Then he transferred to the right-wing Party of the farmers and the bourgeoisie, in 1921-1924 represented its interests in parliament. He was engaged in the promotion of environmental protection ideas, the organization of national parks, in particular, on the islands of Djurgarden and Blo-Jungfrun . Subsequently, Starbek became an honorary doctor of political sciences at the University of Tübingen .

He died on September 30, 1931 .
