Biography

At the beginning of his career, he held many different posts until he received command of the 40th commando battalion. In the rank of brigadier he held two high positions: Director of NATO Policy at the Ministry of Defense of Great Britain and the British representative at the Pentagon . After the attack of September 11, 2001, he participated in the planning of the invasion of Afghanistan, which many newspapers called the beginning of his career takeoff [2] .

Dutton led the 3rd Commando Brigade serving in Afghanistan . In 2003, he commanded a brigade in the Iraq war , receiving other units of the British Army and the US Marine Corps . Thus, he became the first British to command American soldiers since World War II . His subordinates participated in the very first, most difficult battles of the war.

In the rank of general received command of the Royal Marines. Remaining in that post, he returned to Iraq in 2005 to lead the southeastern division of the multinational force. Here he attracted media attention, accusing Iran of supporting the Iraqi resistance. Before resigning, Dutton was appointed Deputy Commander of the ISAF in Afghanistan and held this post from 2008 to 2009. Resigned in 2010 with the rank of lieutenant general.

At the end of 2013, he was appointed Governor of Gibraltar [3] , but in September 2015, he voluntarily left his post, without waiting for the end of the official term. In an official statement, Dutton indicated that he took this step for personal and professional reasons, however, according to unofficial information, he decided to respond to the "toothless" policy of Great Britain in response to Spain’s increased pressure on British overseas territory [4] .
