Taxonomy

The new species was first described in 1934 [2] . He is known for only one male 45 cm long, found on the market in Kowloon and designated as a holotype [3] . The species is named after Alfred Crook, a former principal at Queens College, Hong Kong. [4]

Description

The pectoral fins of the stingrays-butterflies merge to form a diamond-shaped disk, they are elongated in the form of wide β€œwings” exceeding the length of the disk. Snout short and wide with a blunt tip. Behind the eyes there are splashes. A rather large curved mouth, nostrils and 5 pairs of gill slits are located on the ventral side of the disk. Between the nostrils lies a leather flap. The teeth are small, narrow and pointed. The ventral fins are small and rounded [5] .

Biology

Like other tailed-like stingrays, butterfly rays breed by egg-production. Embryos develop in the womb, feeding on the yolk and histotroph [1] .
