In addition to factories, they converted tanks into self-propelled units and in units. Of greatest interest in this case is the conversion made by the forces of the 559th battalion of tank destroyers in the summer of 1943. From June 7 to 13, 10 Pz.Kpfw.II from the 12th Panzer Division was transferred to the battalion. The 7.5 cm Pak 40 guns weren’t enough for all the cars, as a result an interesting hybrid appeared, known as the 5 cm Pak 38 auf Fg.St. Pz.Kpfw.II (Sf) . The Pak 38 anti-tank gun was placed on the Pz.Kpfw.II Ausf.F chassis along with a full-time shield, not just a swinging part, but with a gun carriage, but without a frame and wheels. The resulting structure was "sheathed" in front and on the sides. Ammunition was placed in special boxes on an engine plate. Judging by the available photographs, there were several similar alterations.
