International Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly on December 8, 2005 (Resolution No. A / RES / 69/97 “On Assistance in Mine Action”).
The decision was made to draw attention to the clearance of unexploded ordnance and the ban on the installation of anti - personnel mines .
In a 2006 message on this day, the UN Secretary-General indicated that landmines have no place in any civilized society . He called on governments to ratify the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty and the “Protocol V (on explosive remnants of war) to the Convention on specific conventional weapons”.
