Record History
Unlike other German states that used the Reichstaller as their main currency, Bremen used the French trading coin Luidor in its calculations. 1/5 of the luidor was equated to the Bremen gold thaler [1] . Thus, unlike other German states, in Bremen there was a gold , not a silver standard .
In this regard, Bremen had its own monetary system. 1 thaler of gold corresponded to 72 groten [1] or 360 schwaren [2] .
In the second half of the 18th and first half of the 19th centuries, the gold thaler was a monetary unit, since no coins of this denomination were issued [3] . Only in 1863, 1865 and 1871, thalers with the denomination “THALER GOLD” were minted in small editions at the Hanover mint [4] .
In 1871, after the unification of all German states into a single empire , their monetary units were also unified. According to the monetary law of 1871 , 10 marks were exchanged for 3 1/93 of the Bremen gold thalers. Thus, one thaler of gold corresponded to 3 marks 32 Pfennig [5] .
According to the norms of the gold thaler, a memorial medal, called the exchange thaler , was minted at the Hanover Mint in the amount of 5,000 copies. It was commissioned by the Bremen Chamber of Commerce in 1864 in honor of the opening of a new exchange building. It was not legal tender [6] . The inscription "GEDENKTHALER" led to a certain confusion and the classification of this coin as a coin.
