Story
The script is based on the story of Joy Mangano - a single mother from Long Island , who invented the self-draining Miracle Mop , disappointed in the ordinary. To find his place in life, Joy is ready to sacrifice a lot, but on the path to success, she expects many losses and disappointments.
Together with Joy and her two children, her single mother Terry lives, who spends all day in bed watching soap operas , her maternal grandmother and her unemployed former husband Tony. Her paternal half-sister, Peggy, constantly humiliates Joy in front of her children for a failed marriage. Joy's father, Rudy, further complicates the situation when he divorces a third time and decides to move to his daughter's basement.
Mimi and Joy's best friend, Jackie, advises Joy to develop her talent for inventing unusual things. Annoyed by the use of a regular mop, a woman designs and creates an innovative, self-pressing type of mop. Rich Italian widow Trudy meets Joy and decides to invest in her product. They contract with a California-based company to manufacture mop parts at a low price. To avoid a potential lawsuit, the company recommends Joy make a payment of $ 50,000 to a person in Hong Kong who has a similar product . The manufacturer repeatedly invoices Joy to redo their defective parts, in the end she refuses to pay.
Joy meets with QVC CEO Neil Walker, who agrees to sell her mops on television. To make another 50 thousand mops, Joy takes a second loan . When her first sales attempt fails after Neil Walker shows the product in a bad light, Joy demands that she be allowed to do a second commercial. Mops begin to sell, bringing in thousands of dollars; Joy's success is soon overshadowed by Mimi's sudden death.
Joy’s business is in danger after Peggy raises the producer’s salary without Joy’s approval. The manufacturer refuses to return the money, and a loophole in the contract allows them to fraudulently patent Joy's mop design as their own. Shortly after filing for bankruptcy, Joy discovers that there has never been such a product in Hong Kong, and the manufacturer tricked her. She comes into conflict with the owner of the company, Derek Markham, forcing him to recover losses and refuse any claims on her patent or accept a criminal charge.
Joy becomes a successful independent business woman who sponsors other inventors, supports an aging father, and Jackie and Tony are her most valuable advisers.
